from john tomson - i am considering buying a dehler 34 1989. however, i know little about the dehler. i am a rookie sailor. my preference until now was a sadler 34. how robust is the dehler? how suitable for distance sailing? how suitable for the clyde estuary?

very wide ranging question! dehler's high build quality is well known. osmosis is virtually unheard of, and the 34 has few known trouble-spots (the wheel-steering problem is discussed on this forum). the d34 went through many variants, in terms of rig, interior layout and keel/rudder shapes, but all were based on the same db1/db2 ior 3/4 tonner hull, so they are all fast. they are light in weight (about 4.5 ton), so will be livlier than the sadler. the d34 is also mainsail-driven, but the large main is very easily handled, as all models had lazyjacks & full-length battens, plus single-line reefing from the cockpit. distance sailing? i made several trips in mine between uk & holland without qualm, and i heard of an owner planning ym triangle and round britain. one thing is for sure: if you try it and don't like it, you will have no trouble re-selling!

having just bought a 1987 34, my first boat i have found it easy to sail, very competitive and very easy to park! mine is tiller steering and has a two blade folding prop. i also looked sadlers which i liked but my decsion to buy the dehler was based on the ease of sailing and the layout which is so easy to live with. and yes we've been out in a couple of pretty big seas and she's looked after us well.

hi. looked at many 10 metre boats, including the sadler 34. just bought a dehler 343, very steady and fast as well. good layout and seems a good build so am very pleased with her. no long trips other than plymouth to the solent, but no qualms about long trips, the layout is good and great storage which is something other volume builders seem to forget. good luck
